“This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5). The prevalent idea or definition of light in the minds of men is that of a luminous body like the sun (during the day) or like the moon (in the night). Although the moon is a lower light compared to the sun, it is a reflector of the sunlight. However, the term “light” is beyond a physical luminous body; that is a definition of light in some aspects. There are other definitions of light. In biblical terms, light speaks of something one can learn of.
A matter (either living or non-living) is something that is made up of knowledge when x-rayed. There is nothing in the universe that is void of knowledge. Everything in the universe was put together by knowledge. Anything can be learnt; an ordinary handkerchief or fingernails can be learnt. Everything that the Creator made was light. Everything we see around us is a light and can be learnt. Human beings, fishes of the sea, the waters in the ocean, planets, stars, are all light because they can all be learnt; they are composed of knowledge. This is why the mind of a man who dedicates himself to learning anything on earth to its minutest composition will be brightened.
You cannot harness real power if you do not love knowledge. Whosoever is not interested in knowledge will not do well or go far. Whosoever is not interested in knowledge will downplay light. However, the purpose of light is to promote a man’s mind. Some people ignorantly say that ministering to the Church should not be like that of a classroom setting. Our minds became dull because of carnal needs. Focusing on our carnal needs is our greatest undoing. Satan purposely designed that diversion to take our attention away from doing things that would make us appreciate in the things of God. Satan just wants us to focus on solving our carnal needs so that we won’t appreciate spiritually.
Ministering to people’s carnal needs has no input of knowledge; there is no learning of God. There are pastors who can pray all day for the carnal or natural needs of their congregation, and they are having breakthroughs. Though they receive from God upon asking, they won’t change spiritually. Solving carnal or natural needs is not supposed to be the vocation of a believer, that is supposed to be something by the side. Our occupation should be the learning of gospel light. If all men are learners, no one will put his or her hand on the chin to fret about life. This is because the mind would have been made too bright to be encumbered with carnal needs.
Acquiring the knowledge of God ought to become our priority and our need. God never made man with the need of food, shelter, and clothing. The real need of a man is not anything that promises to sustain his outward man but things that make for inward improvement and this is only possible via learning or knowing God. A man whose inward parts have been enlightened won’t look down on himself. Such a person won’t feel belittled or cheated because his mind has been brightened with light. Wole Soyinka will never feel inferior when put side by side with Aliko Dangote because he has something that Dangote does not have.
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.” (Gen. 1:1-5). What men generally refer to as light is the sunlight. However, it is evident from the scriptures above that it was not the sunlight that God called day. The light here is the first light and it is different from the sunlight that came afterwards.
“And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.” (Gen. 1:11). So it means that these trees were not created under the sunlight. “And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.” (Gen. 1:14-16). This tells us that trees were first made before the sun was made. So God saw or had enough light to make trees. God did not need the sun to see the earth, water and every other thing. So the trees and the seeds of the earth were not made in the night, they were made in the day--a day without the sun. What does this day look like? Was it just a brightness? How was God seeing when there was no sun, or what did God call light?
So it means that plants did well under a condition of day that was void of sunlight. If the scriptures mentioned that the sun was made to rule by day, then it means that there is a day in the noon day. That day has not passed. God only threw in sunlight to illuminate the day. So it’s very possible that the day is a dark one; the day is another type of night that’s enough for God to see. Presently, we do not find any light when the sun is taken away. If the sun was made on the fourth day, then it means that three days rolled by without the sunlight. This should make scientists mad.
So the first thing that God did was to say, “…let there be light…” (Gen. 1:3). Light is something worthy of learning or knowing, it can also be something that shines or that is luminous. So sunlight falls into the category of the second definition, as something that can make the natural physical environment bright so as to see other things. But God did not need the sunlight to see a day. That tells us that God is a Spirit who does not need our natural apparatus to help Him see or do things. Similarly, our spirit man does not need the sunlight. The Spirit of God also does not need sunlight. The light that God introduced in the beginning is enough for the earth and that light has not departed, it’s still here. If that light is taken out, there won’t be what is called day anymore. So the skeleton of the day that we see is that light and it’s still there.
When we think of illumination, we should not firstly think of a light bulb. Thinking of the bulb as light is a limitation, as it is the same mindset that makes us think of the sun as the only kind of illumination. God Himself does not need sunlight to see. God created an environment in Genesis 1 for Him to begin His own creation, and that environment is what He called light. We don’t know what that light is.
The sun is not the light that God uses. We need the sun to see but God does not need the sun to see. In Genesis 1, God brought things out from His thought to the realm of the spirit; in Genesis 2, He brought things out from the realm of the spirit to the realm of the physical. So there is a light in the realm of the spirit, and there is also darkness. God needed that light in the realm of the spirit to create all those things (including the sunlight) and said it was very good.
This light that was present before the sunlight is what is responsible for the sunlight. The materials God used to make the sun, moon etc were taken out from that light. The light simply means understanding. Everything we see has got an understanding. We are able to learn things because they’ve got understanding to give.
“Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.” (Prov. 8:14 ). The personification of wisdom here tells us that wisdom is a matter or a body of knowledge that can be learnt or known. Wisdom secretes knowledge. Wisdom and understanding have to work together to make a man know or have knowledge. Knowledge is a storage of the workings of wisdom and understanding. A man who is being made wise will locate the resource of knowledge; understanding helps him to have an in-depth knowledge of what he has found.
Wisdom is the beginning, and it is the principal thing. However, a man who has seen wisdom should also get understanding. When you get understanding, you will have knowledge. Knowledge comes after the acquisition of understanding. Wisdom is seeing a thing but not clearly; understanding makes you have a grasp of that thing, and it becomes yours. When you have owned a thing, you cannot forget it. When you learn a thing and you cannot remember anymore, it’s because you never understood it. That knowledge never became yours. When you cram, you can only retain the knowledge for a short period of time, because it will soon leave you. However, understanding clips what you have found to you and they won’t depart from you.
So the first light is a body of understanding that God said to be. That light formed a canopy against the darkness. That darkness that was present in the beginning was not a material for creation and this was why the world was first without form and void (Gen. 1:2). The word “void” means that there was nothing in it, but immediately God brought light, He brought substances. So when God said, “let there be light”, He filled the void with substances. That was what God called “day”.
So when God was saying, “let there be light”, He was spreading out a world of understanding. God spread a world worthy of interaction with Himself, something He can relate with for the purpose of creational activities. God wanted to create things, but He needed light which He called the day. The day became a spectacle or google through which God saw the things He created. It was like the canvas of creation was spread on earth, and everything created came from that light.
A dark cup is a light because it is made up of things or particles that can be learnt or understood. Everything we can physically see is made up of energy, photons form particles, and particles form compounds and things we see. In the same way, every man is a light because he can be understood. Scriptures say that a man should dwell with his wife according to knowledge (1 Pet. 3:7). This is because a woman is a light that should be studied and vice versa. Every man was a kind of light before he would eventually meet the light of Christ. John the Baptist was referred to as a burning and shining light (John 5:35). It means that he was showing something to his generation. John the Baptist was a luminary of the spirit; he was a shining light.
“And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Luke 1:76-79). John the Baptist was a powerful man. Apart from Jesus who was a light, John the Baptist was also some kind of light. John the Baptist did all those things written in the above scriptural passage, but Jesus did more. You cannot prepare a way when you have not been made an entity of light. John was a light, Jesus was a higher light. Jesus did not only recover our sights from blindness but saved us with light to the uttermost.
Every salvation that a man experiences is light in phases. This simply means that the man is gradually gaining comprehension from the light that is sent. Salvation is the ability to relate with the understanding that God brings. “The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.” (Psalm 119:130). The purpose of light energy is to convert a man into an understanding being. When light is present in a man, he has an inheritance. So no man can harness the power of any light if it’s understanding is not at work in his soul.
This present creation is a lower understanding (or light). Created things came from some understanding that God has, not that which God is. We have so far related with God with what He has, not what He is. There are certain things that God made that are not His. There are things from God but not of Him. That’s why God will leave a man who is tussling with Him concerning things like land, or properties etc. Though He is the Creator, He can let go of them because those things are not of Him. God will oftentimes tell us not to strive with people over things like clothes, money etc because He is trying to teach us Who He is and wants us to be like Him. He wants us to know that those things are not things we ought to own.
God knows the nature of all things He created, He knows that they are not worthy of ownership. God made such things in such a way that they pass away with use. So they are things that are meant for use, they cannot be owned. You can never own your car, but you can use it. Things that are truly owned cannot be shared, just like a man cannot share his alimentary canal with another because that is something he owns. The same thing applies to the oil in the vessel of the five virgins; they should not give it out because it’s their own (Matt. 25:6-9).
The ultimate message is that God is light and there are messages that precede this. There is a message that says, “the Lord is light”. A time will come then when the Almighty Father becomes our light, then ultimately, God will be our light. There is a slight joining between the Father and God. There is God the light who is the Father and there is God the light who is more than the Father. When God is dealing with a man as a God, it’s different from when He is dealing with him as the Father. There is still some room in the fatherhood of God to bear with our infirmities or tolerate some things.
When God is raising everlasting sons, He does so as the Father of lights (James 1:17). The Father chastises and corrects sons; He wants them to be trained to a place where they cannot turn back (Heb. 12:6-9). The perfection in everlasting life is a training in light until a man cannot change or turn back to corruption. This power to be unchanging is not something that comes upon you instantaneously or imposed on you. Rather, it is something that will be inherited gradually; it is a learning that the will of a man will inherit. That’s learning salvation. Giving a man salvation is introducing him to a program that will require his cooperation. When God the Father introduces you to the program of salvation, you have to do or obey it. It is in doing it that you will be perfected (Matt. 5:44-48).
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” (James 1:17). There are two things about the lights of the Father. Firstly, there is no variableness in it, and secondly, there is no shadow of turning in it. These are the two attributes of the Father: He does not lie (or vary) and He also does not change (or repent).
The warrior against the lights of the Father is evil. Evil is a perverted light that should be refused. God wants to deliver those who have attained Christ from evil. Evil is a form of everlasting light that has the ability to war with God’s light. Another word for evil is iniquity or wickedness. The doctrine of Jezebel and Balaam against the everlasting Churches in the book of Revelation were evil (Rev. 2:14,20). Balaam’s doctrine was a law inside him that was perverted. Satan perverted the light on the inside of Balaam. It means that Satan is most interested in those of us who are their way to everlasting life.
The dimension of the fatherhood of God is where we are chastised. Then, we would be brought into the actual dimension of God; this is the last promise where God will dwell in us, walk in us, will be our God and we will be His people (2 Cor. 6:16b). The Almighty is the Father. The Almighty is the owner of the mystery of the Father (Col. 2:2). So the actual word for “almighty” is Elohim. The Almighty is el Shaddai, the God who is more than enough. The Father is a God who trains, builds, oversees and condescends to bless the Almighty.
This Almighty is light. God revealed Himself to men like Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the Old Testament and taught them the covenant of the Almighty. On the other hand, the children of Israel started with the name “Lord”. There is a light higher than the light of the Almighty, and it’s the light that is God. This is the message, but no man can understand this message except it is taught Him by our Lord Jesus.
Jesus taught Apostle John the message of this last light (1 John 1:5). So God is beyond the light of a bulb that shines. God can appear to a man and brighten up his environment, yet He has not taught him the message of light or known God. Infact, when God comes in such a physical manifestation, it’s a veil to knowing who He really is.
Everything is light and if God is light, it means God is everywhere. God exists without the heavens, the earth, seas, hell, or the world to come. God is a light that no one has ever seen, even Satan has not seen Him before. “No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.” (John 1:18). John was not referring to a natural man here but men who have spiritual stature. Angels are a kind of men with a high stature but they have never seen the light of the true God. Since time began, no one had seen God.
There’s something about the light that God is, it is the realm of the bosom of the Father. The bosom of the Father is the hiding place of the Father, that’s His Godhood. The Father lives in Himself. The bosom is God’s eternal home. The word “bosom” was figuratively used to talk about a hiding or concealed place where no one can get to, yet it’s a home for God. The scripture says that the eternal God is our refuge. When God is in that place, He is all and all. The only begotten Son abides and dwells in this bosom and He is learning terrible things there. Jesus is learning as a God.
The bosom of the Father is an entirely new place that Jesus entered into. Logos emptied Himself from this dimension when He dropped into flesh as Jesus, and from there, He began to enter the phases of glory as He grew up in the spirit. Jesus finally entered into the bosom of the Father as God in flesh. Logos (or the Word) who was with God in the beginning was not a God who was wearing flesh (John 1:1). The God who wears flesh is the Son of God.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (John 1:1-3). Jesus was Logos in the beginning before creation and His habitual home was the bosom; that’s the place that’s called “with God”. The word “with” is an eternal world; and it is a world of reward. To teach concerning anything that is “with God” is a very high message in the spirit. The reason God gave us brain, heart, soul, spirit, and mind to live in the body is for us to be able to transact with things pertaining to God.
“In him was life; and the life was the light of men.” (John 1:4). This life is not Christ's life, but everlasting life. Men should live out everlasting life before they can have Eternal Life or before they can know how to be “with God”.
God is light; this light is not a light in creation but a light beyond creation. The way a creature will perceive or understand light differs according to its spiritual stature. Children of God should see (or understand) God more than angels. There is something called light in the uncreated world. God’s light is an unspeakable energy.
God is not just an aspect, He is all. God is all things. “He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.” (Revelation 21:7). God is all things. The all-things God is, is one that is heaved beyond anything we can think or know as all things. Everything we see or can think of has an attachment to God and there are even things we don’t know. All things were made by God, but God is not all things that are made but all things unmade. All things that are unmade sits on all things that are made. Before horses existed in the natural, they had existed in God. So a horse is not just a thing we see that runs. Everything we can physically see in creation are things in God that He had to redefine so that we can relate with them in understanding. God is light; He is everything.
